Deep Phenotyping (Quantitative Histopathology)
About us
The CRUK Beatson Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability, and integrity.
Position outline
We currently have an exciting opportunity to join a cancer research group in the institute, focussing on deep phenotyping technology using a combination of advanced in situ assay methods, tissue imaging, image analysis and artificial intelligence methods. The Le Quesne group researches tumour morphology and
microenvironment, and uses this knowledge to aid in the development of novel
therapies. Glasgow is a world centre for the study of malignant mesothelioma, a highly lethal disease with few treatment options that is related to exposure to asbestos. The post on offer is funded by the IAMMED-Meso (Integrated Analysis in
Mouse and Man for Early Detection of Mesothelioma) CRUK Programme grant. The
work will involve using the latest in cutting-edge quantitative histopathological
techniques to help answer questions about mesothelioma tumour biology in human
and animal tissues.
We are looking for a Senior Scientific Officer to develop, apply, and analyse advanced in situ assays including multiplex immunohistochemistry and high-plex tissue profiling methods. The successful candidate will liaise with academic staff in the research group and external collaborators, and develop high quality tissue-based assays, images, and data utilising our state-of-the-art instrumentation (Ventana Discovery Ultra, Akoya PhenoImager, Akoya PhenoCycler Fusion, Visiopharm). The post holder will also provide training and support for junior staff and collaborators.
You should possess a BSc in biomedical science and/or an equivalent level of histology experience. Experience of immunohistochemical antibody validation, knowledge of both the theory and practice of immunohistochemistry, and proven ability in interpreting tissue morphology are essential. Previous experience working with multiplex in situ assays, digital pathology platforms, and image analysis is desirable but not essential as training will be provided. Experience of working with human tissue in the application of the above techniques is also desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team are essential, as the role is integral to numerous exciting research collaborations. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Our overarching research ethos at the Institute is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity. The diversity of our staff and students is also what makes the Institute such a vibrant place to work and advance discoveries in cancer research. Family friendly policies, our collaborative ethos, a focus on good mental health and well-being and opportunities for all help to create an enjoyable and inclusive workplace where your voice matters.
The Institute is also committed to increasing the number of female scientists at the postdoc level and beyond and encourages female applicants to apply. We have recently introduced a highly attractive maternity policy which provides 12-18 months support and funding for postdocs wishing to take time off to spend with their children amongst other family friendly policies
